This page contains my favorite published clips. I’ll be adding to it as I get more things published.
Biology major surges in popularity at UF — I pitched this story, and it ran on the front page. I love when that happens. I was surprised it hadn’t been covered already, but the time between when the major was announced and when I wrote the story gave me a lot of material to work with.
Market sells unique items — Despite having my least favorite headline that’s ever run with one of my stories, this one was special. I came up with the idea and pitched it after seeing a “faux boyfriend” advertised on Facebook. This is the most bizarre article I’ve written to date. Plus, both the editorial and the cartoon in that day’s paper riffed on the Facebook Marketplace theme.
Students advised to use caution for holiday travel — I wrote this the week before Thanksgiving. I was assigned the story by an editor, but I enjoyed doing it because I knew it was something people would read. Also, it convinced me to leave on my Thanksgiving break early.
Memorial held for cyclist — My first Alligator assignment. I got thrown into the deep end — my first reporting story, and I was attending a memorial. It was hard, but I learned that when you listen to people talk about their loved one, they want to talk. It’s all about letting them know you’re there to respect the memory of the departed.
Legal experts debate issues in Taser case — Oh, Andrew Meyer. This was a monster of a story to do. I made more than 20 phone calls to get the necessary interviews, but in the end, I’m proud of how it turned out. Looking back, I wish I had called Meyer’s lawyer.
Crist’s cuts could stall UF construction — I enjoyed learning about this story. Sometimes it’s fun to be assigned a story I don’t know much about because I kind of figure out what the story is as I do the research and interviews without preconceptions. I feel like I took a big issue and applied it to the little things here, which I’m happy to have accomplished.
